Day 6 : Port Blair to Pune

For work reasons, I had to keep this trip short. But I would recommend to spend atlleast 2 more days then what we spent.

If I had them, I would have visited Limestone Caves in Baratang Island on one day and would have trekked to Mount Harriet from Madhuban on the other day.

Advice : These ships might run delayed for several reasons. Thus it is always advisable to reach Port Blair a night prior to your flight back home.

After Kala Pathar we took a ship back to Port Blair.

After Elephant beach we visited Kala Pathar Beach. For me personally, our 2 wheeler ride was better than the actual destination. For most of the route I was driving besides the sea and though lush green trails.

As I said, for those who don't want to trek. Such boats are available.

Day 5 : Elephant Beach, Kala Pathar Beach & then return to Port Blair from Havelock

Considered as one of the unique beaches located in Havelock Island, Elephant Beach is untouched by commercialism and boasts of an environment that exudes a peaceful ambience. Popular for snorkelling, Elephant Beach boasts of some of the vibrant coral reefs on the island.

Considered as one of the unique beaches located in Havelock Island, Elephant Beach is untouched by commercialism and boasts of an environment that exudes a peaceful ambience. It is renowned not only for its pristine beauty but also for its serene environs. Enjoy the sapphire coloured waters, the gentle waves, bare trees and the vast horizon along with the sense of being one with the nature on this spectacular beach of Havelock Island.

It is situated at one remote corner of Havelock Island, and one has to either take a boat or trek on a trail which in parts is steep, slippery and muddy. but a short trek to reach Elephant Beach. We chose to trek and hired services of a guide to help us navigate though this 60 - 75 minute route.

Advice : The trail is not a difficult one, one can easily manage it. Would highly recommend taking a guide along though.

Day 5 : Port Blair to Havelock & Radhenagar Beach

We started from Port Blair around noon and after a 3 hour ride we reached Havelock islands. We went straight to the Hotel to dump our luggage, hired a two wheeler (most convenient and also most economical mode of transport in Havelock) and left for Radhenagar Beach.

Radhanagar is Without a doubt the most famous beach in the Andaman Islands. Crowned as β€œAsia’s best beach” and β€œ7th best beach in the world” by Time Magazine, this place sees a lot of tourists. It truly is an unforgettable curve of white sand with perfectly colored blue waters, all lined by lush forest and palm tress. It is easy to enjoy this postcard perfect beach – lie down and marvel at the sunset, or go in for a quick swim.

Best time to visit Radhanagar beach would be after 3:30 PM till sunset. One could see beautiful shades of sun setting

If you started around 9 AM then the boat should drop you back the Rajiv Gandhi Water Sports Complex by 2 to 2:30 PM. One could then head to the famous Chidiya Tapu.

Chidiya Tapu also known as "Sunset Point" and "Bird Island" is around 25 - 30 KM from the city is very famous for its magnificant views during Sun Set.

Ross Island, a Coral Island and the First Administrative settlement of Britishers in Andaman. Once glittered with all modern amenities and was packed with beautiful buildings and government institutions before an earthquake hit the island (in 1941). Since then this island could never recover from the damage put up by the nature and the British then left the island and took settlement at Port Blair. It makes you nostalgic and takes you back in time when this was an administrative settlement for the Britishers. The Indian Navy has rebuilt some of the old buildings like the bakery and the local stores, from where souvenirs are available.

After buying tickets and obtaining permits we went to Cellular Jail

Cellular Jail known as Kala Pani at Port Blair is associated with the freedom struggle of India. It is used by British especially to exile political prisoners to keep them away from any freedom moment. Cellular Jail is declared as the National Memorial to pay the tribute to our great freedom fighters that raise their voices against the British rule.

Visit this to feel a connection with the hard work and sacrifices from our freedom fighters. You can enjoy the Light and sound show in the evening depicting the story of the struggle of our freedom fighter in Cellular Jail. Entry ticket to Cellular Jail (entry is allowed only till 4 PM) is Rs 30/- and for light and sound show Entry fee for Adult is Rs. 50/-. They have 3 slots for light and sound show. 5 PM (Hindi), 6:15 PM (Hindi) and 7:30 (English).

Day 1 : Port Blair

We flew from Pune to Port Blair (via Chennai) and landed in the Islands around 2 PM.

As I was not using the services of any Travel Agent we had to spend a couple of hours for

1. Booking tickets for cruises / ferries from Port Blair to Havelock Islands (and back). One can choose from three options Government Ferries (slowest amongst all), Green Ocean (I chose this because it was fast and also allowed us to step out of the cabin to have views of the sea while sailing) or Makruzz (most luxurious)

Advice : If you are traveling in December - January do book them a month in advance (Green Ocean & Makruzz allow online bookings)

2. Buying tickets for ferry to Ross & North Bay Islands and make bookings for Snorkeling and Skuba Diving

Advice : These can be easily obtained from Rajiv Gandhi Water Sports Complex (which is just a few minutes walk from Cellular Jail). One can also save money by booking Scuba Diving directly (without travel agents). I could have got them for 2500 whereas agents won’t sell it for anything less than 3500.

3. Obtaining permits and tickets from the Forest Department to visit Jolly Boy / Red Skin Islands.

Advice : This is mandatory for visiting the islands. Obtaining them in advance from the city office would mitigate you from the risk of not obtaining them (as only a limited number of them are issued for a given day)

4. We didn’t have time in our itinerary to visit to Baratang Island. If you have it do make bookings and obtain permits (if required)

Advice: I would recommend to visit them for Limestone Caves and Parrot island which is nearby.

The climate of Andaman & Nicobar Islands is Tropical and has a humid Weather. There is no winter season at islands. The rainy season happens twice a year, Southwest monsoon in mid-May to September, and Northeast monsoon in November to January. The best time to visit the Andaman & Nicobar Islands is between November and April when the weather is pleasant and less humid so that you can enjoy your vacation.

Andaman & Nicobar Islands is a group of over 572 Islands which makes it a Dream Destination for the Eco-friendly Tourist. Tourist can visit Andaman group of Islands as the Nicobar group of Islands is out of reach for any kind of Tourism activities because a majority of people living in the Nicobar Islands are Tribal who does not like the interference of the outsiders.
