The Washington Post will begin regularly using augmented reality to add another dimension to its reporting.

The Post previously used AR to augment its reporting in 2015 to illustrate the lead-up to Freddie Gray's arrest and death in Baltimore, but at the time readers needed to download a dedicated app to access the content. The newspaper's new AR campaign will involve capabilities that have since been built into the Post's two content-providing apps. The paper will launch one AR experience this spring for a series by art and architecture critic Philip Kennicott. At this point, the plan is for the post to dole out an additional AR story once time per quarter. Joey Marburger, the newspaper's director of product, says, "We're still very skeptical about AR as well, but... everyone's got an AR device in their pocket. That's potential scale there."

Avegant jumps into the world of augmented reality with a new headset, powered by a light-field display.

Dubbed the Avegant Light Field, the headset creates virtual images that blend in and interact with the real world, very similar to the Microsoft HoloLens. The technology displays images at multiple focal points simultaneously to give depth to the virtual. The headset is still in prototype mode, although the company has plans to turn it into a consumer product. In a video, Avegant co-founder Edward Tang shows off the technology, which you can watch here. —

Apple was granted a patent related to an “avatar editing environment,” which would allow iOS users to create a digital representation of themselves within iOS apps.

The patent describes a product where in some implementations, one or more elements of the avatar can be animated. For example, the avatar’s eyes can be animated to track an object in a user interface or to indicate direction. This combined with two previous augmented reality-related patents and Tim Cook’s comments on AR show that the company has an interest in integrating AR elements into future versions of iOS.

Google revealed new VR technology in a BuzzFeed video.

The company invited BuzzFeed’s The Try Guys to the YouTube Space in San Bruno to play with Tilt Brush, Google’s room scale 3D painting VR app. The company also showed off its headset removal technology for the first time, which allows spectators to see a VR headset users’ full face while they are immersed in an experience. This technology, created in collaboration with Daydream Labs, constructs a 3D model of the users’ face and uses a green screen to overlay the image into a video of the experience. Check out our video of the week.

Magic Leap has acquired Dacuda’s 3D scanning assets. Dacuda’s 3D team, which includes company founder Alexander Illic, will be joining Magic Leap.

Magic Leap is a mixed reality startup that has raised $1.4 billion in funding, has raised $1.4 billion in funding, but has yet to release a product, and a recently leaked image of a prototype has led to widespread skepticism. Current Dacuda CEO Peter Weigand will remain at the company, leading the productivity solutions division of the company. Magic Leap’s recent acquisition will expand its work in computer vision and deep learning, while also building out its operations in Europe, where Dacuda is based.

Nice to have your here Aditya
Sony’s month-old PlayStation VR headset is exploding on the market, suggesting that rival devices from HTC and Oculus must either cut their prices or end up as only bit players. PlayStation VR is winning the high-end VR market over HTC and Oculus but by far the biggest sales are in the cheap, low-end part of the market dominated by Samsung’s Gear VR.

The White House has released an AR app that projects a 3D version of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue on a real dollar bill. “1600,” designed to help kids learn about the government, uses facial recognition to focus on George Washington’s face on the bill and constructs the White House on top of it. Press Secretary Josh Earnest narrates the history of the building while the app cycles through the seasons and events like the White House Easter Egg Roll. This is the White House’s first foray into AR development.

A selection of cities with 360/VR videos to explore before you travel. It's very basic but a fun start to see what's possible in the future. http://nomadlist.com/vr

Google Earth VR is “the Google Earth experience I’ve been waiting for,” writes Adario Strange from Mashable.
After trying out the new app on HTC Vive, he says the feeling of power is “immense” as you float over the planet and dive down into cities and mountains. “It’s easily one of the most powerful VR experiences in recent memory.” The app is available as a free download in the Steam VR store
Throwback time. This was the most interesting and practical application of 3D/VR I ever worked on. Customising upto a billion combination of lamps and quickly previewing it in the web, helping people make better and faster decisions. Was a super fun project. https://vimeo.com/151760141
