Having traditional Portuguese Leitão (sucking pig) in the town that made it famous. Melhada, just north of Coimbra hosts many makers of the famous dish, but we are happy to have discovered Oasis Restaurate and their delicious 300g offering! Mmmmmmmmm

There’s not much that vegetarians and carnivores agree on in terms of menu, but this place is the exception to the rule. Everything is made with mushrooms! And it’s a great way to hide from the madness of the market below you.

From beginning to end, even when it’s packed, everything runs smoothly and the food comes out prepared to perfection. Usually we avoid starters to save room for the main event, but not here — the croquettes are not to be missed. Try the ceviche for a surprisingly yummy mix of lime juice and fresh mushrooms, and savor the creamy mushroom soup while you’re at it. If you’re with a group, share the dim sum and/or the shrimp and shitake dish before diving in head-first to the pumpkin and mushroom gnocchi. Finish off the meal with a truffle crème brûlée and roll your way out the door, or stay and wash it all down with one of their many digestivos. Whatever your choice, you’ll be wanting to book a return visit soon. The space alone, with its dark, cozy, comfortable setup, is waiting to welcome you again and again.

The view from the top of the Arch at Praça Comércio takes things to another level! For lunch around the center, don't get caught in a tourist trap on Rua Augusta, just walk east one block to Vinho sem Principo and order the bochechas de porco preto (black pork cheeks) and you'll have done the day right. :)

This is the view from the top of the aqueducto das águas livres (aqueduct of free water) which some say is haunted because of the old "lovers leaps" that used to take place here. Looks like a cool walk to me, so don't get any ideas, lovers!

Answering the question: "What's your favorite non-Portuguese food to eat in Lisbon?" This was tough because it depends on my mood, but today I'm craving Vietmanese Pho!

An American football bar in Lisbon? Absolutely! Campo Ourique 's Bar Mignon might have football on the walls but it's not on the screen so don't get too excited, but the drinks are good and the atmosphere reminds us of home so...

Go visit Taqueria Pistoles y Corazon for cafeteria-style authentic Mexican food. Go early for excellent mezcal and real agave tequila before indulging in a slew of soft tacos and fantastic salsa, otherwise you'll have to wait in line.

Parque del Passatiempo in Galicia, Portugal's neighbor to the north, is a wacky wonderland of weirdness, and the perfect place for a bocorone (marinated fish) picnic.

Someone has an adrenaline addiction! Check out these guys from Cobblestone Riders: they've hacked skateboarding in Lisbon, Porto, San Fran, and Rio! I had an interview with Ricardo Marques, the inventor of these beasts here on the blog: http://www.atlaslisboa.com/meeting-the-maker-Ricardo-Marques-on-surfing-cobblestones-in-Portugal/

The amazing aerial performer Raquel will be performing from the ceiling of the Casino Lisboa in Parque das Naçoes on Saturday night at 11pm! Entrance is free (if you don't gamble that is) and it will be one hell of a show. Before you go, you can stop in for dinner at any of the waterfront pastelarias but my favorite is Arizona Restaurante for octopus with a view!

It was a big weekend in Portugal! The Pope canonized the children who witnessed the Apparition of Our Lady of Fátima yesterday, Benfica won their 36th football championship (people are still celebrating into the morning) and one of our own won the Eurovision Song Contest last night with a song in Portuguese. No wonder the city is completely exhausted! #somuchwinning

Hi Sarvesh! Pasteis de Belém are small, round custard tarts that are super ooey-gooey yummy. Everyone makes them around Portugal and there is a lot of contention over who makes the best ones (most people say Pasteis de Belém in Belém makes the best) but Confeitaria Nacionale in Baixa makes damn good ones.

Damn..it is a generalistic sugar! Not worth keeping it as a souvenir even..
Ellis Dixon 2 weeks ago
It's powdered confectioners sugar but you should absolutely keep it as a souvenir. Maybe just put it in your kitchen and leave it out. It's definitely a great conversation starter! :)

It might be raining, but that's no excuse not to go for a surf. You'll be wet anyway! The waves are good today at Carcavelos, and there might be some room for you out there. While you're at it, grab a coffee and a pecan tart at Angel's cafe when you're ready for a break. It's right there on the boardwalk- you can't miss it.

If you are in he mood to climb AND eat, look no further than Vertigo, lisbon's premier bouldering gym. The chocolate cake is sinfully delicious and the panini are on point. Go for the chicken and pesto to reward yourself after sending the 6c. Go on, then!

Enjoying a wine tasting at my favorite spot near the castle: Wine Bar do Castelo where you can tell the waiter what kind of wine you like and they'll bring you three to choose from! The cheese pairing is particularly delectable especially on a day as nice as this!

Lisbon's best book shop is Ler Devagar. Still the number-one Lisbon shop to browse books and have a read with a drink and a cig late into the night, and their cheese plate is ooey gooey yumminess. Don't think you can't bring your selection to read at the table below the old printing press, because that's totally cool with the staff.

The best bifanas in Lisbon can be found at A Parreirinha do Chile. The bifana is a typical Portuguese sandwich that you can find everywhere, but nobody cooks these pork steaks on bread better than the “king of bifanas,” as the owner of this small bar in Praça do Chile likes to be called.
