Whenever possible I go for Japanese style breakfast, typically consisting of a simple piece of broiled or steamed fish and rice. A traditional Japanese breakfast also usually has dozens of small delicate accoutrements of small fruits, vegetables and seafood. In most luxury hotels throughout Asia you can find a great Japanese breakfast like this simple one I had here at 7am this morning in Hong Kong via room service after my daily workout. Yum!

GUEST QUESTION
Have you ever had a vacation to Honolulu? Is Christmas to new year a good time?
We went to Hawaii in August 2013 and it was glorious. We visited Maui and the Big Island. Both were beautiful and relaxing.

The Four Seasons Hualalai on Big Island is one of the nicest and secluded beach properites in the world. There's an adults only pool area overlooking the ocean and you and hang out there all day and never see more than a dozen other people and no screaming children. Giant see turtles roam the beach. (See pic)

Big island is the largest island in the United States' Hawaiian archipelago in the Central Pacific. Its diverse terrain spans colored-sand beaches at Papakolea (green) and Punalu’u (black) to lush rainforest. Within Volcanoes National Park, there are 2 active volcanoes, Kilauea and Mauna Loa. Hapuna Beach and Kahalu'u Beach Park in the west are popular snorkeling sites.

The Four Seaons Maui is also wonderful but is more of a giant resort vs Hualalai which feels smaller and more special. Maui is known for its surfing.

Honolulu is more commercial and less special than the other islands.

The climate in Hawaii is generally perfect all year round.

Christmas to new year's is the busiest time and probably twice the price of other times.

Oh wow sounds just amazing. Thinking it would be a great destination during winter in the northern hemisphere.

Would you suggest a few days on the big island and a few in Maui? I'm thinking 8 days all up.
Any recommendations for luxury hotels in Rio over Christmas - New Years other than the Fasano?

I am currently staying in the beautiful hotel V Nesplein - right in the centre of the city. The design of the rooms does not remind of a typical hotel - I'd like to borrow some elements and incorporate them in my own apartment (the black sink in the bathroom or huge round hanging mirrors). Moreover, they do have a big restaurant/bar with a terrace downstairs, which also worth a visit.

What are some of the luxury experiences around Tel Aviv?
Hey Swaminathan! I've been to Tel Aviv several times. Tel Aviv is all about boutique hotels vs big hotel chains. I would say the best is the Normann Tel Aviv for high quality luxury. It's pricey but worth it. Incredible rooftop pool too!

Hi
the infinity pool at Cavo Olympo in Plaka Greece... it will make you never want to leave! this is the only lux boutique hotel around this area... and it's really nice. Great dinner buffet as well! Spa on the other hand, not worth trying. I got a horrible manicure and the men were using the sauna naked (maybe normal in Greece but no thanks haha)

What has been your experience if you have spent time in Sheraton by the Park in Sydney, Australia?
00:12
Hi Sarvesh, thanks for the question! I've only stayed at the Four Seasons in Sydney and tbh didn't love it. Room was super tiny. Probably my only mediocre Fours Seasons experience worldwide.

Tell us about your own experience at the Sheraton Sydney! I'm sure Pepo Members would love to learn more!
Sarvesh Sah 6 months ago
It was a great experience for me. I was not only upgraded to a suite but also got to enjoy evening buffets with a view of the Sydney harbor. Spotting cricketers in the same hotel was a nice coincidence as I stayed there at the time of cricket WC in 2015

What are your favorite luxury hotel companies? Eg, Mandarin Oriental, Four Seasons
Four Seasons and Mandarin Oriental are both consistently tops in service and overall customer experience.

I also like the Firmdale hotels - Soho hotel in London, Ham Yard in London, Crosby in NYC.

I feel like Ritz Carlton has gone down a bit in terms of quality and cannot really compare to the Four Seasons and Mandarin.

Oberoi hotels in India are also world class.

Aman hotel group is also above and beyond but super expensive.

GUEST QUESTION
Jason Goldberg What is worth splurging on during luxury vacation?
Spend on:
-a good bed,
-a quiet room,
-an adults-only pool if you are not with kids,
-a knowledgeable tour guide.
- I usually like to splurge on one high end meal for trip but otherwise prefer more bistro style dining

Don't spend on:
-rather use points for long haul flights of you can. Usually points go further than cash when biz class award seats are available.
-Asia and Europe and India have great point to point regional airlines, so fly airlines like Air Asia or Indigo in economy for short flights and skip biz class and major airports unless u get cheap upgrades.
-dont pre-pay for breakfast at your hotel if you dont usually eat it.
-dont pay for checked baggage , but only packing what fits in carry-on luggage. In the last 10 years I've probably checked a bag at most 3 times!

Boutique hotel or luxury 5 star? Which do you prefer?
It depends! I generally go for a good deal on affordable luxury. A good gym is a must-have, or an arrangement with a good gym very nearby.

This coming Sunday night I'm staying at the High Line Hotel - boutique hotel - in NYC where I got an incredible rate. No gym but they give an all access pass to Equinox which is the best gym in NYC and is 2 blocks away. I'll report back!

I think both terms (5 star and Boutique) are over used. What's really important when you stay at a hotel? For us a silent room, a comfy bed (if possible king size), cleanliness and truly honest service.

Great response from the management who obviously value there clientele
Visited one of the world's must luxurious and secluded hotels last night here on Koh Kut (or Koh Kood). Some of the Soneva Kuri rooms start at $2,500 per night. This suite had a private beach, 3 bedrooms, an outdoor BBQ pit with a sunset view and a swimming pool which includes a water slide. I didn't stay at the hotel, but managed to get dinner at the restaurant Benz - which Gwenyth Paltrow called one of her favorite restaurants.

We stayed at this property and definitely can not recommend it. The suites at the Lagoon have a private beach but the water is so shallow that you can not swim. The hotel lost its main beach a couple years ago in a conflict with the land owner. You get shuttled to another beach which is annoying. A beach resort without beach. The villas are outdated and many under renovation. For the price you pay there are far better options in Thailand. Trisara for example.
Lovely stay last night at the Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles -- more hipster than luxury and not expensive, but very well done! Part of new trend of urban cool vs over the top lux. I'd go back and again!

Totally agree, the Ace in New York was so hipster, I got sick of it, the lobby turns into a club each night and the music is so loud that you hear it up to the third floor. We moved rooms to the 8th floor to sleep. Ace London is very different and very well located, we stay there often.

Omg so many to choose from! Tbh my favorite foodie spots are usually more about the food than luxury. I love a great tapas bar or eating at the counter at a great bisto - get me to the bar counter of any Jason Atherton restaurant or to Barrafina in London or to a solid sushi counter in any city.
