I could post pics of Portland food all day but, instead I'll move on. My #2 reason for loving Portland. The city is unapologetically weird and I love it! Has anyone else had that experience?
Kristen Kaethler 11 months ago
Fava leaf tagliatelle with house made bacon. This dish was amazing. One of my favorities of the evening and pasta is definitely not my go to!
Kristen Kaethler 11 months ago
The first dish of the evening was light, refreshing and beautifully presented.
This is a dinner we had Beast in Portland. The Chef is an incredibly talented female that to me shows all that Portland has to offer.
Kristen Kaethler 11 months ago
1) Food - the food in Portland is amazing and much more affordable than in many other cities - plus Portland is like the definition of farm to table.

Hey guys, as I mentioned Portland is my favorite American city - it's tough because there's so many places I haven't been - plus I love love love New York. But there are 5 reasons why I love Portland the most (so far).
Kristen Kaethler 1 year ago
What's your favorite American city? I still have so many to visit - but I think as it stands now, Portland is my #1.

Anyone have a favorite small town? I'd love to hear about it and possibly add it on my list.

Revelstoke is one of these magical places that has almost everything. Mountains, river, lakes, and ponds, beautiful hiking, a couple great little restaurants, coffee shops, the flats (perfect for camping, fishing, dirt biking, and more). It's pretty amazing for a small town. And this view ain't have bad either.

This is Charlie, he's my friends duck. He's super social and it you let him he'd hang out with you in the house πŸ˜‚. So would Lola his chicken pal! I just love the little paradise my friends have created in Revelstoke.

Pausing my Chile πŸ‡¨πŸ‡± travel posts to talk about my Easter 🐣 weekend, spent road tripping from Calgary to Revelstoke. First stop was Field, BC. Next up we stayed with friends in Revelstoke for a night, in their cute little farmhouse. Honestly their place is the best - besides the cute little house, they have 3 chickens πŸ” , 1 rooster πŸ“, 2 ducks πŸ¦†, 2 cats 🐱, 1 parrot and 1 dog 🐢!!! It's a full house!
Just something about this little town...
Kristen Kaethler 1 year ago
Field, BC - a sweet little mountain town of fewer than 200 people houses artisans, a great little restaurant, coffee shop, a phenomenal view, scrambling, hiking, and more....it is definitely worth a stop if you normally drive passed. I would love to hear what other people have to say?
Our sweet little room at Emerald Lake. Love having a wood burning fireplace. Is there anything better than a glass of wine 🍷 in bed with a fire πŸ”₯ roaring next to you?
Kristen Kaethler 1 year ago
Has anyone else been to Emerald Lake Lodge?
The lounge area at Emerald Lake Lodge. Just behind where I'm standing taking this photo is a fireplace and to the right is a bar. Cozy and warm, definitely love the setting. This area is for sure one of the nicer parts of the hotel.
The pond on the other side.
How can you not fall in love with this view.
The view of the lake. It's a chilly weekend even though it's supposed to be spring and the lake is still frozen over.
I still have soooooo much to post about Chile and answer a few questions regarding Thailand. But it's Easter 🐣 weekend and I'm taking a little break to spend time with my love. So we drove up to Emerald Lake Lodge in Field BC (close to Lake Louise). The view on the way up is incredible. No matter how many times I do this drive, I am in love with its beauty. Does anyone else get mesmerized by the Rockies?!?

we have plans to go to philippines and Thailand on November. Any tips where to stay in Thailand?
Absolutely!!! Richard, I am tied up here for a couple days. But Monday I will send you a list.....yay!!!! I'm so jealous, I would head back in a heart beat!
Kristen Kaethler 1 year ago
Richard - what do you like to do when you travel? Eat, drink, sight see, lie on the beach, party?!? Thailand and Philippines both have a lot of different vibes depending on where you are!
Richard Villar 1 year ago
All of the above except the partying. We are more on the not so young age level :). We want to focus more on Thailand. Because we are US citizens but Philippine born.So whatever advise as to which hotel affordable and in a nice neighborhood is very much appreciated

Something I learned, that I still don't understand, haha is the undying love of hotdogs!!! Restaurants and stands on every corner - fully devoted to the hotdog. My favorite thing about it was the coordination of the name and sauces on the dog. The hotdog Italiano was so named as the thick strips of avocado, mayonnaise and ketchup made up the colours of the Italian flag. These hotdogs are sauce heavy!!!
I loved that churches and other buildings like these were everywhere. The architecture in Santiago was amazing, a mix of very old and new!!!
Kristen Kaethler 1 year ago
Santiago was about exploring and understanding the culture we were in. It was about architecture, food, observing everyday life, understanding the lifestyle. Checking out the different neighbourhoods of this very metropolitan city! Hopping on the metro and just wandering...

What's your reason for traveling to specific places? I traveled to Chile on a childhood dream. My next door neighbour growing up was Chilean. Her family moved to Winnipeg when she was about 6 years old. I spent a lot of time at there house, eating Chilean food, taking part in their celebrations and learning about their culture; and I fell in love. It stayed with me for years until I was lucky enough to fulfil my dream and travel to her Country. My love for this place continued. I absolutely loved everything about Chile, the people, the landscape, the food, the wine, wow!!!
View from my apartment in Chile πŸ‡¨πŸ‡±
A few years ago I traveled to Chile and was lucky enough to spend 5 weeks there. It was in April, getting into the fall season. I flew into Santiago and went everywhere North, East and West of there. Santiago is an amazing city. At the time there was 5.5 million people in Chile's capital. A fantastic place to begin my trip. Founded in 1541 this city was rich with history. I rented an apartment downtown, this was back before the days of AirBnB πŸ˜‚. But for about $25-40 for a hostel, $50/night for an apartment with a full kitchen and rooftop pool was a steal of a deal. Plus the view wasn't half bad either!

Jason Goldberg there are so many must places to see in Chile - a short trip definitely wouldn't do you justice. I was there for just short of 5 weeks and covered a fair bit. My suggestion for time is a minimum of 3 weeks, 6 weeks would be ideal.
Kristen Kaethler 1 year ago
I will post my must see places in Chile later this week. It's a truly incredible place.
Man oh man, I have so many travel experiences to share - I don't even know where to start...most recent trip, favorite country, favorite trip, hmmmm

One of the things that I find striking get about Japan is how clean the cities are. As many people as there are there is a deep respect for common space. Streets are clean, cars are polished, windows are clear, it's truly amazing. One of the best examples is how perfectly manicured the parks are. I will post a few photos of The beautiful park in Narita behind the temples.

There's so many things to do and learn in Japan. It is one of the most interesting cultures I've ever had Tre pleasure of immersing myself in. I have been to Japan previously - in 1997.....I know, so long ago. Then this year, wow - my visits were 20 years apart!!! Food is incredible here and you can learn a lot about the culture by eating.

Here's the lovely eel I was speaking of before. There's nothing like it. I've ordered eel a couple times back in Calgary now and it just isn't the same. I might have to stop until I make my way back to Japan.

One of the coolest things we got to see in Narita was all the Chefs at about 8 AM preparing and cleaning the eel for the day. They have large buckets (size of an oil drum) filled with live eel. They nail the head, and slide their knife down the middle of the eel to cut it in half lengthwise. They remove the skeleton and it then gets taken to the Chef to be grilled over white charcoal for service. Amazing!!!
